Army basketball forward Ella Ellis, a junior from Houston, Texas has been named to the All-Met Third Team by the Met Basketball Writers Association. Having his best season in an Army uniform, Ella shot over 40 percent from the field and led the team in scoring and rebounds.
Ranked as one of the top players in the Patriot league this past season, Ellis is looking to further build upon his continued success as he enters his senior year with the Black Knights.
This has been an extremely disappointing season for the Knights, as they finished 12-18 and 5-9 inside conference play. Ellis has been the bright spot for the team over the last couple of years, as he was also the first
Army
basketball player to be named to the first-team All-Patriot league since 2008. Those of us who have been watching Army basketball closely are hopeful that Ellis’ matureness and leadership will be able to lead the team to its first postseason appearance since 1978.
As his final season is set to begin, he is quietly but rapidly becoming part of Army history. He’s the second player in the 101-year history of Black Knight basketball to score 500 points, 130 rebounds, and 50 assists in one season. Furthermore, Ellis is currently ranked 8th on the all-time three point shooting list for Army basketball.
It’s been tough to watch this team play over the last few years. They have the talent to compete in the conference, but haven’t exactly figured out how to use it all yet. It looks like they are torn between keeping a little bit of consistency within the staff and turning a new page. Head Coach Zach Spiker and Ellis both came in the same year, and as Ellis graduates from West Point next year, it’s fair to say that Coach Spiker is on the hot seat, and unless he can turn the fortunes of the Army basketball team around, don’t be surprised to hear rumors of a head coaching change surface this time around next year.
