With Central Michigan looming on the horizon here are a few items of note from the Academy this week.
No decision on Miller
Trey Miller
may not have fully recovered from the injury he suffered against
Air Force
but he is playing through the pain regardless. Miller practiced "fairly well" per coach
Ken Niumatalolo
, while back up
Keenan Reynolds
also looked strong on the practice field.
Opinion: This could be a tricky situation for Niumatalolo to handle. Miller had undoubtedly his best game of the season against Air Force as he was able to hold onto the ball and make the reads required in the offense. Reynolds however came in when needed and also looked very strong, especially in the passing game. The expectation is that if Miller is anything less than 100% he won't start, but it is definitely a case of watch this space. It is also worth noting that the game is on Friday night so there will be one less day for Miller to fully recover.
Nick Sloan
is special team’s player of the week
Navy
freshmen kicker Nick Sloan was named Independent special teamer of the week after hitting field goals of 39 and 41 yards along with two extra points. Navy linebacker
Matt Warrick
was also honored.
Opinion: It seems a long time ago now since Navy seemingly had all the kicking prospects in Maryland working battling it out to make the 2012 roster. Sloan is now a perfect 14 of 14 kicking on the season (five field goals and nine extra points) and has completely justified Niumatalolo's decision to trust a freshman with the responsibility of winning Navy games. If Sloan continues to develop and hone his skills as a kicker then the Midshipmen should have that roster spot nailed down with no issues for the next few years.
Basketball practice open to the public
The Navy basketball team will hold an open practice on October 20th, right before the homecoming day football game against
Indiana
.
Opinion: Basketball season has snuck up from nowhere again, but it is less than one month until the opening day tip. What better way to spend homecoming morning than by soaking in some hoops and getting a full day of Midshipmen sports action. This is what makes October-January the best sporting months of the year.
