Navy Midweek Notes

Here are a few tidbits of news and opinion as the Mids get ready to take on Texas State this weekend.

Marcus Curry comes back to town

When Marcus Curry was kicked off of the Navy team in 2010 for a violation of team rules and subsequently left the academy you can be pretty sure he never expected to set foot on campus again. This Saturday, however, Curry will lead the Texas State rushing attack in Annapolis as his game Bobcats squad come to town. Curry has over 500 yards and nine touchdowns rushing in 2012, and the fifth year senior would love nothing more than to put one over on a group of old teammates who he keeps in regular contact with.

Opinion: It is good to see that Curry was able to right his ship and carve out a successful college career for himself. It says a lot for a person's character when they can overcome an obstacle and come out shining on the other side. Though it is only right to wish any former Midshipmen well, it would be ideal if Curry had a good game this Saturday and Navy still won convincingly.

Exam effect

One of the least publicized facts about the Mids puzzlingly tired looking performances over the last couple of weeks is the fact that the players have been in the middle of exams. In the words of Ken Niumatalolo "You kind of try to plan for it, try to simplify things. Our guys have to stay up and study for their exams. We’re not going to make excuses."

Opinion: While most football factory schools can spend the season concentrating on little but their next opponent schools like Navy have far more to contend with. Though there has been no lack of effort over the last two games the Mids looked visibly worn down and the hope is that with the grueling exams out of the way the team will be fresher and more energized for the remainder of the schedule.

Commander-in-Chief's Trophy watch

Army lost 28-7 against Rutgers in New Jersey this past weekend.

Opinion: This was a strange game in which the score does no justice to how well Army played. Rutgers scored 21 late points, including a crazy fumble return with less than a minute left, to make it look like a blow out. Navy-Army this year has the chance to be something truly special if both Academy's bring their best game to the field.
