Rarely, if ever, has a game between two teams who have lost to Stony Brook and Troy been this…
News from the Academy
Great news today as the condition of Navy third string quarterback Rafi Montalvo was upgraded from critical to serious but stable. Montalvo, if you remember, suffered life threatening head injuries in a single vehicle accident in Florida over Thanksgiving. Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo told reporters after practice on Thursday that Montalvo was "doing a little better" and that doctors were "cautiously optimistic."
Analysis: Obviously this is the best news possible in what was a dire situation initially. Montalvo is clearly a fighter and hopefully he continues his improvement all the way back to full health. I would expect a number of tributes to Rafi before and during the Army-Navy game.
Navy service assignments announced
The football players who have been performing on the gridiron all year received their military assignments this week. Of the 28 seniors on the football team 18 will be commissioned into the Navy as ensigns while the other ten are set to become Marine second lieutenants. Players of note from this year include Gee Gee Greene and Tra'ves Bush (Surface Warfare) and Bo Snelson (Marine Corps Ground).
Analysis: Obviously this is one of the biggest differences between the Military Academies and any of the football factory school and the news that came down today will lead these players on to the next steps in their lives.
Basketball with a future conference foe
Navy will be going on the road on Saturday to play basketball against Tulane. Normally this would be a run of the mill early season road game, but with the recent news that the Green Wave are to join the Bug East with Navy in the future (although football only) there is a little more to this. The 4-4 Mids are riding a two game win streak and would love to get over .500 while laying down a marker for this regular future gridiron opponent.
Analysis: Who knows what the Big East (that name makes no sense with Boise et al joining) will look like in 2015, but for now Navy should get used to travelling to Tulane. One thing that is becoming clear though is that Navy needs to get into the Big Ten or ACC as of yesterday.
