2012 Navy Report Card: Fullbacks
Sophomore Noah Copeland won the starting B-back or fullback job this spring. Copeland enjoyed a productive season as he started every game and finished the year with 162 carries for 738 yards and scored five touchdowns. He started slowly as the rebuilt Navy offensive line struggled against bigger more talented defensive front during the opening month of the season. Copeland had his best game rushing for 126 yards against VMI. He ran for two touchdowns and 110 yards against Texas State. Noah never broke a long run this season which surprised me since he has good speed. Copeland has excellent hands and lost only one fumble all year.
Senior Prentice Christian opened the season as back-up fullback and appeared in nine games. He ran for 155 yards, averaged 4.6 yards per carry and scored a key touchdown against Navy. He was a workman like back who dropped on the depth chart with the late season emergence of Chris Swain. Chris didn't appear with the varsity until the final four games of the year. Swain is the prototype Navy fullback that fans are used to seeing at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium the last decade. He carried the ball 15 times for 154 yards including a 46-yard touchdown run against Arizona State where he ran through and then away from the Sun Devils for a touchdown. Chris was nicknamed the "Swain Train" at NAPS in 2011 when he was named the team's offensive MVP. He is the ultimate power runner but has surprising speed. Chris is very strong and demonstrates impressive leg drive. He has exceptional balance and very quick feet for such a big man. Word has it that the staff may move Copeland to slotback in an attempt to get them both on the field.
The Mids are well stocked at fullback. Sophomore direct admit fullback Maika Polamalu, the cousin Steeler All-Pro safety Troy Polamalu, appeared in nine games and demonstrated his quickness with a 21-yard touchdown run against VMI. Freshman Quentin Ezell is a big physical fullback who saw limited time in two games.
