Navy dominates Army in baseball
Posted Apr 2, 2013

Things are looking good for Navy baseball. The Mids completed a 3-of-4 games series victory over the Army Black Knight on Monday at West Point. Navy has also won the Star game this season. Navy is off to a 3-1 start in the Patriot League and is in the driver's seat to earn a trip to the NCAA. No, this isn't an April fools joke.

On a double header Easter Sunday in West Point the Midshipmen baseball team proved too strong for the Black Knights twice. The sweep of the first two games in a four game series not only gives the Mids a 2-0 start in Patriot League play, but it also clinches the highly regarded Star for the winner of the series between the Academies each year.

The double header sweep was the first for Navy in almost exactly a decade as the last time it occurred was on March 29th 2003. That is also the last time the Mids took the Star. Though baseball may have started the weather was anything but summer like as the two teams battled though windy and overcast conditions for the entirety of both games. Navy took the first 7-1 in the seventh , before completing the day with a 4-2 win.

The offensive star for the Mids was junior first baseman Kash Manzelli who went 5-for-8 though both games with four RBIs. Just as pleasing to the coaching staff as Manzelli's effort will have been the pitching performances from Stephen Moore and Anthony Parenti. The two Navy starters each earned wins, while Moore gave up just five hits in his first career complete game effort. the value of a starter going all the way on a weekend of consecutive doubleheaders (the final two games of the series are both played tomorrow) cannot be underestimated and the work of Moore saw rest for the remainder of the Mids pitching staff.

"Stephen Moore just did a great job for us today. For him to step up and do what he did was just a phenomenal effort. He let us get our feet on the ground in that first game and pitched great," said Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. "Anthony picked up right where Stephen left off, as far as the momentum of going out and attacking hitters and he kept at it. He gave us a huge quality start."

Navy looked to be up against it in the first game as Army starter Chris Rowley held the Midshipmen batters to a solitary hit in his appearance against them last year. This time though things were different as the Mids took a more aggressive approach and got on top of Rowley early burning him for eight hits and seven allowed runs. The eight hits were matched in the second game and the pressure began to tell on Army who looked tired and sloppy on their way to making four errors.

On Monday Navy piled up a season high 15 runs in the first game in route to a 15-4 win. Seven different Navy players had at least a pair of hit with Greg Dupell getting three hits. Johnny Schoberl picked up the win for the Mids.

In Monday game 2 Army's Jacob Page had a lead off homer that put the Black Knights up 8-4. The Mids added a run in the ninth but it wasn't enough as the Black Knights prevailed, 14-7.

The series victory takes the Mids over the .500 mark for the season as they sit at 15-13 (3-1) sets Navy up for a strong Patriot League season this spring.
