Lots happening around the Academy so let's get straight to the good stuff.

If you were wonder where to place the blame on the lack of intra squad scrimmages this spring then you might be a little surprised by the name of the coach who has raised your ire. In a recent interview coach Ken Niumatalolo talked if how his head was turned (or "bowed in shame" in his own words) when the former Eagles, Rams, and Chiefs head coach basically called full scrimmages a waste of time and lazy coaching. Vermeil instead talked of running more focused practices based on in game situations to get the players thinking and reacting as they would in actual contests.

This has allowed Niumatalolo to refine aspects of the triple option which weren't working as well as he would have liked last year, while at the same time incorporating elements of the spread offense. With Keenan Reynolds passing skills the Mids have been lining up in three and four wide out sets, and yes Trey Miller is one of them, in an attempt to give the offense a whole new dimension going forwards. If this works and Navy is able to move the ball through the air then few will complain about the lack of time spent scrimmaging this spring.

Navy Lacrosse falls just short in upset bid

When you welcome into town the number one team in the country it is going to be a long day regardless of what sport you play. When your own team is 3-7 and on a four game losing skid it figures to be even worse. Credit then must go to the Navy lacrosse squad who played one of their best, and bravest, games of the season against top ranked Maryland before finally going down 11-8. The Mids battled back from a 3-0 deficit to lead 5-3, and then had a 6-5 lead early in the second half before the wheels fell off. Maryland boasts one of the most potent attacks in the country and the Terps showed up big in the second half when it mattered. Navy will be hoping that the effort which was on display here will show up again in one weeks’ time against Army.

Women's Lacrosse still streaking

Though the men may be struggling the same cannot be said of the Mids Women's Lacrosse team who won their seventh straight match over the weekend. The 15-5 win at Holy Cross sees the ladies clinch a berth in the Patriot League Tournament. That is the fourteenth straight win against a Patriot League opponent for the 12th ranked (media poll) Mids who are looking to play deep into May this year.
