Navy baseball on a roll
Posted Apr 19, 2013
Fresh off a 13-2 Tuesday thumping of Maryland Eastern Shore, the winning Navy baseball team has a chance to improve its record even more when it hosts a struggling Lafayette team this weekend.
moved to 20-19 on the season with a dominating 13-2 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore on Tuesday night. The Mids made the most of their 16 hits and rode the power hitting of
(3-for-5) who had a career-best five RBIs, and Robert Currie's (2-for-4) who's three RBIs were also a career high. Veech, who was undeniably the offensive star of the night, had a fourth inning grand slam that took all the life out of the Hawks and gave the Mids a lead that was never seriously under threat.
Stephen Geiss gave the Mids all he could with a career long start which saw him go six innings and tie his career high of five strikeouts. After escaping a potentially game altering bases loaded jam in the first Geiss found his rhythm and took over the game with his varied pitching assault. At one point he sat down nine consecutive Hawks, a run which included striking out the side in the fourth inning.
"Stephen Geiss did a really nice job for us. He had three pitches going and pitched very well for six full innings," said Navy head coach Paul Kostacopoulos. "Obviously Craig had a great day. The grand slam really got us going in the right direction."
One other aspect that really pleased Kostacopoulos was that there were multiple players with multiple hits. With Navy hitters sitting on the fastball they were able to swing freely and showcase the depth that this team contains. Solid swinging of the bat as a team will be the difference between this team finishing over or under .500 at the end of the season.
After six games on the road the Midshipmen will be thankful for a four game home series with Lafayette this weekend. The Leopards are a dreadful 6-31 on the season and are 1-12 over their last 13 games. The Mids will be looking for a series victory at the very least, and in all honesty a sweep should be the goal.
