Checking in on Navy Lacrosse
The Mids sit at 4-5 on the season with a conference record of 3-3. They have a 60 percent win record at home, but only a 25 percent win record on the road. The season has been a weird one in the way the wins and losses have fallen and it just seems that for whatever reason the team has failed to find its groove and push on in big moments to make the season feel more special.
The win over the weekend at Boston University was a big one. This was the first ever meeting between the two sides and the Mids were coming into the game on a three game losing streak, the longest such streak of the season. In a season as short as the lacrosse one is those three game losing streaks cannot be allowed to continue. When it becomes four or five losses on the bounce a level of panic starts to set in and the team is quickly lost.
It was also a big game as a couple of players stood up to be counted when the pressure of the season was on the line. Both midfielder Austin Heneveld and attackman T.J. Hanzsche scored hat tricks, combining to account for six of the Mids 13 goals in their 13-7 win. When the season looks like it might be going nowhere these are just the kind of performances that can lift a squad and drive them on toward bigger and better things.
The Mids have two more games in league play. They actually play the top two teams in the Patriot League, getting Loyola (5-0/9-1) at home before travelling to West Point to face Army (4-1/6-3). While the Mids would obviously love to win both, even splitting these two games would give the ream great confidence for the final regular season game against Johns Hopkins and then into the post season.
There will be much more coverage of the final few games as the season reaches its climax.
