Texas DB picks Navy
"I talked it over with my parents the night before. I told them I wanted to commit to the Navy program. After workouts, I called Coach Yo. I've really enjoyed the talks I've had with Coach Yo about going to Navy. As a football program, they're doing things that they haven't done in a long time. The staff has been very successful. I started thinking about the military aspect of it and I wouldn't mind doing it at all to receive the quality of education I'll be getting in Annapolis."
Johnson has not been to campus yet, but plan on seeing the Midshipmen on Sept. 13 in San Marcos, Texas when they take on Texas State and then will go on his official visit in January.
"I've done a lot of research," Johnson said on the U.S. Naval Academy. "I've talked a lot with Coach Yo as well as Nick Martinez, who is also from Waco. My mom was very excited about my decision. She's happy that I'm trying to do big things with my life. My dad, I called him at work, he seemed excited as well. He told me it's a great program and that's all on me now to make the most of it.
"It feels tremendous to be committed to Navy. It's a good thing to know where you're going by your senior year to be able to put that extra focus on the season. I think we're stacked with eight guys with D-1 offers plus our quarterback who was number-2 at the Elite 11. We have some talent."
At Reicher Catholic, Johnson plays cornerback and strong safety. He said navy likes his speed, willingness to make a big hit, and his ball skills which give him the versatility needed to be looked at on the offensive side of the ball as well. Johnson held additional offers from Army, Colgate, and Sam Houston State.
