Scanning the 2009 Navy Schedule
Posted Mar 12, 2009
Another season, another winning season. Another bowl game, another Commander-in-Chief's Trophy. That's the plan for Navy again this season. However, the Midshipmen face another challenging schedule in 2009. GoMids.com breaks down the entire docket.
Sept. 5 at
backed out of a game against the Buckeyes,
didn't. This will be a whopper of a challenge for the Midshipmen.
Ohio State is a perennial national championship contender. The Buckeyes went 10-3 last year and lost a 24-21 thriller to Texas in the Fiesta Bowl.. Navy will give Ohio State all it can handle, but it looks like an 0-1 start for the Midshipmen.
Sept. 12 Louisiana Tech
Navy isn't going to stay winless for long, but La. Tech won't be a gimme. The Bulldogs went 8-5 last year and beat
17-14 in the Independence Bowl. It marked
's first first bowl win since 1977. The Bulldogs went 5-7 in 2007.
Sept. 19 at
Another tough game for Navy early in the season. Pittsburgh enjoyed its most successful season under Dave Wannstedt last year, going 9-4, losing to
3-0 in the Sun Bowl.
Easy pickings. Like Army, Navy and
, Western Kentucky is a Division I-A independent.
The Hilltoppers went 2-10 last year. Western Kentucky was considered as a reclassifying institution for the 2007 and '08 seasons. The first year that the Hilltoppers will be eligible to participate for the Sun Belt Conference championship and a berth in a bowl game is '09.
Expect nothing less than a dog fight from Air Force. The Navy-Air Force games have been thrilling the past few years.
Navy outlasted the Falcons 33-27 last season in Colorado Springs. The Midshipmen have beaten Air Force six straight times.

No, Rice is no longer a doormat. The Owls have to be taken seriously.
Rice went 10-3 last year an beat
38-14 in the Texas Bowl. The Owls won a bowl game for the first time since the 1954 Cotton Bowl and reached 10 victories for the first time since 1949. Rice went 1-10 in 2005.

The Texas two step continues for Navy at SMU. This should be an easier game than Rice. SMU went 1-11 last year, its only win coming against Texas State.
Back home for a formidable game against Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons went 8-5 last season and that included a 29-19 win over the Midshipmen in the EagleBank Bowl. Navy led 13-0 early in the second quarter and 19-14 late in the fourth quarter. The Midshipmen upset Wake Forest 24-17 earlier in the season.
Don't laugh at Temple. The Owls continue to improve under coach Al Golden. Temple went 5-7 last season. But the Owls lost five games by a combined 18 points.
Nov. 7 at Notre Dame
Bring on the Fighting Irish again. Just two years ago, Navy beat Notre Dame 46-44 in three overtimes.
It ended the Fighting Irish's NCAA-record winning streak against the Midshipmen at 43 games. Notre Dame beat Navy 27-21 last season at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. The Fighting Irish led 27-7, but held off a comeback attempt by Navy. Hopefully, Notre Dame can't hold off Navy this year.
Nov. 14 Delaware
Don't expect Navy to overlook Delaware. The Hens shocked the Midshipmen 59-52 in Annapolis two years ago.
Delaware, a Football Championship Subdivision power, was 4-8 last year.. Should be a Navy win.

Aloha, baby. This is some road trip. But, remember, Navy does have a football game to play in paradise.
Hawaii went 7-7 last year and lost to Notre Dame 49-21 in the Hawaii Bowl.
Dec. 12 Army, Philadelphia
The Black Knights made a fine hire in
, but he has his work cut out for him. He must try to lead Army to its first winning season in 13 long years and beat Navy for the first time in almost a decade.
Navy beat Army for the seventh straight last year, 34-0. Navy has won 13 straight times against Air Force and Army since 2002, outscoring the programs 441-205 during the streak.
Hopefully, the CIC remains docked in Annapolis after another Navy win.
