Navy overcame a 3-0 halftime deficit to beat Army for the 8th straight year, 17-3. Each week GoMids.com recognizes a top offensive player, defensive player and an unsung hero. Look inside to find out which players GoMids.com honors this week.
The
Navy
Midshipmen improved to 9-4 on the season with a 17-3 win vs. Army on December 12th. With the victory, Navy clinched their 7th straight Commander-in-Chief Trophy - a series record. The Mids have also racked up 15 straight wins over service academy rivals
Army
and
Air Force
.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
QB
Ricky Dobbs
Dobbs had 33 carries for 113 yards and a TD, and also completed 3 of seven passes for 61 yards and another TD. The rushing TD was Dobbs' 24th on the season, which breaks the NCAA record for rushing TD's by a QB previously held by Florida's
Tim Tebow
(2007) and Air Force's
Chance Harridge
.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
CB
Kevin Edwards
Edwards had 3 tackles and broke up a pass, but was matched up most of the day against Army's 6'10" WR Ali Villanueva. Although Villanueva ended the day with 5 catches for 62 yards, he was targeted at least 4 other times. Edwards also overcame a 4th quarter shoulder injury to help defend Army's final drive and force a late interception.
UNSUNG HEROES OF THE WEEK
Defensive Coordinator
Buddy Green
Another year, another win over Army based on defense. Army only scored 6 points in their last three games against Navy, and hasn't scored a touchdown since 2006. In this game, Green's defense held Army to only 187 yards of total offense, with 98 of that coming in the 4th quarter after the game was essentially in hand.
NOTE
:
No player can be named POTW more than three times during a season. Players also cannot be named POTW for two consecutive games.
